The timer

Pick a project, press start. That is it. The timer keeps running while you move around the app, minimise it, or forget about it entirely.

Three ways to start and stop

  • Today screen. The project list is right there, with a start button on each row.
  • The global hotkey. One shortcut toggles start and stop from inside any other app, so you never break your flow to switch windows.
  • The menu bar. The tray icon shows what is running and can stop it without opening the window.

While it runs

A running strip stays visible with a live counter. The menu bar tooltip names the project. You can start a different project and the previous timer stops cleanly first, so you never end up with two entries fighting over the same minutes.

When it stops

The entry lands in Time Entries as billable and unbilled. The sidebar badge counts what is waiting to be invoiced, so a forgotten timer shows up as work you have not billed yet rather than disappearing.

Forgot to stop it?

That is what idle detection is for. Step away for long enough and owntime asks whether to keep the time or trim it back to when you actually left.
